letting go

As soon as the door closes behind Addie, my focus shifts to my brother who’s not due home for another week.

He’s sitting on the couch in the living room, head down scrolling through his phone. “Hey, Si,” he says without looking up.

“Is everything okay?”

He puts his phone down and looks up, and for the first time all evening, he isn’t smiling. Something cold presses against my chest and instinctively, I’m sure he already knows. “No, Simon, everything is not okay. But, I’ll wait for Mercy to join us so the three of us can talk.” He glances back at his phone again. “I didn’t know you had a guest, I would have waited.”

“I need to talk to you, so I’m glad you didn’t.”

He snorts in disbelief. “Are you? Then why didn’t you call me as soon as you got the news?”

I don’t bother asking how he knows. It doesn’t matter. He should have heard it from me.

I will the lump in my throat away and my legs to walk over to the dining room table. I can’t believe that just a few minutes ago I’d had Addie spread out on top of it and was finally getting a taste of paradise. For a second, I have the wild urge to run after Addie and ask her to come back and hold my hand.

This is not going to be an easy conversation, but it’s time we had it. I turn my head to look at him and offer my apology. “I’m sorry. I didn’t want to disrupt your work.” It sounds so pathetic an excuse, I cringe. “I didn’t want to upset you,” I add as clarification.

His grave eyes narrow and darken but hold fast to mine, giving me no quarter from his anger. "Are you kidding? Our mother fucking died, Si.” His voice shakes with emotion, his expression is incredulous.

“It took me by complete surprise, Kyle, I didn’t even know she was sick. She asked them not to tell us." I say this as calmly as I can. Looking into my brother's eyes, I register the pain, shock, and anger growing there as a mirror of mine.

"Like mother like son,” he mutters. He’s angry and lashing out, but that hurts.

“That’s not true. And you know it,” I say.

He stalks over to the table and slams both fists down. His demeanor morphs from taut with anguish to loose with anger. “She kept secrets; you keep secrets. Which part is a lie?” He leans toward me, his jaw locked, his eyes grim. I don’t look away from the accusation and hurt in his eyes. I’ve earned them and know better than to pretend not to understand that. I just hope he’ll forgive me.

“I wasn’t keeping it a secret. I swear. You’re in the middle of important work, and you hate talking about her. I was going to tell you, I just didn’t want this to distract you. I’m sorry. More than I can even say.” I make my mea culpa and wait to see if it will be enough.
